VOLUNTEER: Looking for an on-going volunteer opportunity?

The Rensselaer County Medical Reserve Corps (MRC)--the local public health component of AmeriCorps--is seeking new volunteers to help the county health department with public health events such as flu vaccination efforts or disaster response. VOLUNTEER: Mohawk Hudson River Marathon: October 9th, 6am-9am/9am-2pm/2pm-5pm

The Hudson Mohawk Road Runners Club is looking for volunteers for the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon on October 9th. Volunteers are needed at Albany Riverfront Park at Corning Preserve in downtown Albany at the finish line from 6am to 9am, 9am to 2pm, or 2pm to 5pm. The first and third shirts would be helping set up or tear down displays, tables, chairs, supplies, etc. The 9am to 2pm shift would help hand out Mylar blankets, medals, or water to runners finishing the race. VOLUNTEER: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk: October 16, 10am-1pm

Stay fit and volunteer at the same time! The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is an event sponsored by the American Cancer Society to raise awareness of breast cancer and raise funds to support continued research. This year's walk in the Capital Region will take place on October 16th at Washington Park in Albany. Register online today for our team, SPH for Nancy. This event will serve as the SPH service project for U Albany's October Community Service Month.

VOLUNTEER: Habitat for Humanity, October 7th, 8am-3pm

Volunteer to help with the build at at the Morton's Walk site on Alexander Street! Volunteers will be asked to stay for the whole time, and come dressed prepared to work (closed-toe shoes, preferably sneakers or boots, and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty).

The Capital District Habitat for Humanity was incorporated in 1988, and serves the Albany and Saratoga counties. "Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976. Since its inception, the organization and its affiliates have built or rehabilitated more than 500,000 houses around the world for families in need, becoming an established leader in addressing the issue of affordable housing."

PLEASE NOTE: If you participate, make sure to read the build safety information sheet, and bring the completed volunteer waiver form with you to the build site.

VOLUNTEER: Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York: Thursday, October 13, 5:30-7:30pm; Sunday November 6, 12pm-2pm

The Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York is in need of volunters to support sorting and repacking of non-food items, as well as some food items (cookies, produce, etc) at the RFB's warehouse on these dates. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toe shoes; no slippers or flip flips, please. Wear comfortable clothing, in layers, that you don't mind getting dirty, and please leave all purses, handbags and/or personal items in your vehicle. The warehouse is located at 965 Albany-Shaker Road in Latham.

"The Regional Food Bank has been helping to feed the poor and hungry in our communities since 1982. It is the only organization of its kind in Northeastern New York. The Food Bank collects large donations of food from the food industry and distributes it to charitable agencies service hungry and disadvantaged people in 23 counties. From  Plattsburgh to Newburgh, in urban, rural, and suburban communities, the Food Bank provides over 20 million pounds of food a year to 1,000 agencies."

VOLUNTEER: Ronald McDonald House: October 21, November 18, 4-6pm each date

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Capital Region provides temporary residence to families staying in the Capital Region area while their children undergo care at local medical facilities. In addition to providing rooms free of charge for their length of stay, the Ronald McDonald House provides dinner daily to those families.

The SPH has two dates remaining this fall to cook dinner: October 21 and November 18, from 4pm-6pm both dates. Approximately eight students can participate at each event. Meal preparation would take place right at the Ronald McDonald House, located at 139 South Lake Ave. in Albany. (Parking is available on the street). Interested students may sign up for a date on sign-up sheets, which will be available in the GSO Office. Any questions about this event, please contact George at gs2428@albany.edu.

VOLUNTEER: FULL: Pride Center of the Capital Region: Friday, October 14th, 5:30pm-9/10pm

This event is FULL. The Pride Center is in need of volunteers to assist with their Annual Awards Dinner, which takes place every fall.

The Pride Center of the Capital Region serves individuals of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community in the Capital Region, reaching seven counties in the area. Services include health and huamn services support, education to providers and community members and advocacy.
